Amazon Stranded Inventory: What It Is and How to Fix Every Reason Code

Stranded inventory is stock that's sitting in an Amazon fulfillment center with no active listing to sell it through. The units are there, you're paying to store them, and nobody can buy them.

It's one of the easiest problems to miss. Amazon doesn't send an urgent email for most stranded units, and the inventory still shows up in your counts. Sellers often find out weeks later, when a bestseller has stopped selling, or when the storage bill arrives.

The short version
  1. Go to Inventory → FBA Inventory and open Fix Stranded Inventory (on some accounts it's a filter or a tab on Manage All Inventory).
  2. Read the stranded reason for each SKU. It tells you what's broken.
  3. Fix the listing problem, then click Relist or save the corrected listing. The units link back automatically.
  4. If a SKU can't be saved, create a removal order before storage fees and Amazon's automatic actions make the decision for you.

Why it matters more than it looks

Stranded units cost you in three ways:

  • Lost sales. If a top seller is stranded, it's out of stock as far as shoppers are concerned, and you're losing sales rank while it sits.
  • Storage fees. Stranded units are billed monthly storage like any other unit. Once they pass 181 days in the warehouse, aged inventory surcharges are added on top, and those climb the longer the stock sits.
  • Automatic action. Depending on your FBA settings, Amazon can remove or dispose of stranded units after a deadline, often 30 days from when it notifies you. The deadline in your own account is what counts, so check it on the stranded inventory page.

They also count against your FBA capacity. Units that aren't selling lower your sell-through, and that can reduce the capacity Amazon gives you next quarter.

Find your stranded inventory

  1. Go to Inventory → FBA Inventory.
  2. Open Fix Stranded Inventory. If you have stranded units, there's usually also a banner at the top of the inventory page.
  3. For each SKU you'll see the quantity, the stranded date, the reason, and a recommended action.
  4. Sort by quantity or value. Fix the SKUs that matter most first, especially anything that was selling well.

Write down every SKU and reason before you change anything. If a fix goes wrong, you'll want to know what it looked like before.

The stranded reasons, and how to fix each one

Listing closed or inactive

You (or someone on your team, or a feed) closed the listing, or set the quantity to zero on a merchant-fulfilled offer.

Fix: click Relist on the stranded inventory page. Confirm the price and save. This is the most common and easiest case.

Listing deleted

The listing was deleted, but the units are still in the warehouse.

Fix: recreate the offer with the exact same SKU and the same ASIN. Amazon matches the units to the listing by SKU, so a new SKU won't pick them up. Set the fulfillment channel to Amazon.

Listing suppressed or missing information

The listing exists but is suppressed, usually because of a missing required attribute, a main image problem, or a title or claim issue. Amazon adding a new required field to a product type can strand inventory overnight.

Fix: edit the listing and fix whatever is flagged. Our guide to fixing a suppressed listing covers each cause. Once the listing goes active, the units come back with it.

Pricing error

The offer was deactivated because Amazon thinks the price is a mistake, usually because it's far above the price on Amazon or elsewhere. Repricers and bulk uploads cause most of these.

Fix: check Pricing → Pricing Health, correct the price, and set minimum and maximum prices on the SKU so it can't happen again. See Fix a Pricing Error or Suppressed Buy Box.

ASIN merged, changed, or no longer exists

Amazon merged duplicate ASINs, or the ASIN was removed in a catalog cleanup, and your SKU is no longer attached to a live product page.

Fix: search the catalog for the product. If it now lives under another ASIN, create an offer on that ASIN with your existing SKU, if Amazon allows it. If the product page is gone, open a Seller Support case with the SKU, FNSKU, and old ASIN, and ask what happened. Merge Duplicate Listings covers the merge side.

Approval or category restriction

The product needs approval in its category or brand (ungating), and you no longer have it, or never did.

Fix: go to Catalog → Add Products, search for the ASIN, and click Apply to sell next to the listing limitation. If you can't get approval, remove the units.

Fulfillment channel mismatch

The offer was switched to merchant-fulfilled while FBA units were still in the warehouse.

Fix: edit the offer and change the fulfillment channel back to Fulfilled by Amazon.

When you can't fix it: remove or dispose

Some SKUs aren't worth saving: discontinued products, restricted items you won't get approved for, stock you'd sell at a loss anyway. For those:

  1. Select the SKU on the stranded inventory page.
  2. Choose Create removal order to have the units shipped back to you or your prep center, or Dispose if shipping them back costs more than they're worth.
  3. Allow time. Removal orders often take two to four weeks, and much longer in Q4.

Removal and disposal both have per-unit fees, but they stop storage fees from growing, and you decide what happens to the stock instead of Amazon. Manage Aged or Excess Inventory covers the options in detail.

If the units stay stranded after you fix the listing

Relisted SKUs usually link back within a few hours. Some take up to 24 hours. If the listing is active and the units are still stranded a day later, open a Seller Support case:

Message to Seller Support

Hi, I have FBA inventory that is still showing as stranded after I fixed the listing.

SKU: [SKU] FNSKU: [FNSKU] ASIN: [ASIN] Units stranded: [quantity] Original stranded reason: [reason] What I changed: [fix] on [date]

The listing is now active, but the units have not linked back after 24 hours. Could you reconnect the inventory to the active offer, or tell me what else is preventing it?

How to keep it from happening

Most stranded inventory comes from a handful of sources: bulk uploads, repricers, catalog changes, and someone closing a listing without checking whether FBA stock is still attached.

  • Check stranded inventory every week. It takes two minutes and catches problems while they're small.
  • Never delete a listing that has FBA stock. Close it or set it inactive, and plan a removal if you're discontinuing the product.
  • Set min and max prices on every SKU a repricer or upload can touch.
  • Keep SKUs stable. Changing SKU naming conventions mid-stream is a common cause of orphaned units.

The Weekly Restock Review SOP and Inventory Age Management SOP build these checks into a routine.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon charge storage fees on stranded inventory?

Yes. Stranded units are charged monthly storage like any other inventory, and aged inventory surcharges apply once they pass 181 days.

Will Amazon reimburse me for stranded inventory?

Generally no. Stranded inventory is a listing problem on your side, so the storage fees are yours. Amazon reimburses units it loses or damages. If units disappear during a removal or while stranded, that's a separate reimbursement claim. See our guide to FBA reimbursements.

How long do I have to fix stranded inventory?

It depends on your automated FBA settings and the notice Amazon sends. Many accounts get about 30 days before Amazon removes or disposes of the units. Check the deadline on the stranded inventory page, and don't wait for it.

What's the difference between stranded and unfulfillable inventory?

Stranded units are sellable but have no active listing. Unfulfillable units have a listing but can't be sold because they're damaged, expired, or returned in bad condition. They're fixed in different ways: see Handle Unsellable Inventory.
