Add Backend Search Terms
Correctly add backend search terms (hidden keywords) to a product listing so that the product shows up in more search results without keyword stuffing, repetition, or compliance issues.
Prerequisites
- Access to Amazon Seller Central with permission to edit listings.
- Completed keyword research list (from tools like Helium 10, Jungle Scout, or Data Dive).
- Understanding of Amazon’s keyword rules (no competitor brand names, no duplicates, no claims).
- ASIN or SKU of the product you want to update.
Procedure
Open the listing's keyword fields
- Log in to Seller Central.
- Go to Inventory → Manage All Inventory.
- Find the listing you want to update and click Edit.
- Open the Keywords tab.
Enter your search terms
- In the Search Terms field (under “Generic Keywords”), paste or type your keywords separated by spaces, with no commas.
- Example:
brown t shirt short sleeve large cotton organic
- Example:
- Keep the total under 250 bytes (roughly 240–250 characters for plain English text).
- Do not include:
- Brand names (yours or anyone else's).
- ASINs, competitor product names, or claims (“best,” “#1,” etc.).
- Words already used in the title or bullet points.
- Leave “Intended Use,” “Target Audience,” and “Subject Matter” blank unless they genuinely apply.
Save and confirm
- Click Save and Finish.
- Allow 15–30 minutes for the update to process.
Post-Execution Tasks
- Test indexing after 24 hours by searching your ASIN with one of the new keywords (e.g., ASIN + keyword).
- Note which keywords successfully index for tracking.
- Save your keyword list in the Listing Content Folder for reference.
- Record the date of update in your keyword tracker sheet.
Common Issues & Troubleshooting
Changes not saving
Try again after a few minutes or clear your cache.
Not indexing
Wait 24–48 hours or swap out low-performing terms.
Suppression warning
Remove banned words (e.g., “FDA-approved,” “cures,” “guaranteed”).
Keywords reverted to old ones
Refresh or re-upload using flat file.

Contact: Seller Support
Only contact support if your backend keywords fail to save or cause a suppression.
Hi, I updated the backend search terms for ASIN [ASIN], but the fields aren’t saving or the changes aren’t reflecting. Can you please confirm if there’s a system delay or a restriction on keyword updates?
Best Practices
- Use natural, high-volume search phrases customers actually use.
- Add misspellings or alternate forms only if space allows (Amazon auto-corrects most).
- Use spaces only — no punctuation or special characters.
- Don’t repeat any words already in your title, bullets, or description.
- Refresh backend keywords every 2–3 months as trends change.
- Keep a clean record of what’s been added to avoid duplication.
