Add Variations

Correctly create or link product variations (also called parent/child listings) β€” such as different sizes, colors, or bundle packs β€” so that they appear under one main product page and make shopping easier for customers.

Prerequisites

  • Access to Amazon Seller Central with permission to create or edit listings.
  • Each variation (size, color, scent, pack size, etc.) already has its own SKU or listing information.
  • Variation theme confirmed (Amazon supports specific variation types by category, e.g., size, color, flavor, quantity).
  • Product images and details ready for each variation.
  • Confirm all variations are the same product type (don’t mix unrelated items).

Procedure

Find or create the parent listing

  1. Log in to Seller Central.
  2. Go to Inventory β†’ Manage All Inventory.
  3. Find the product that will serve as your parent listing (the β€œumbrella” product that groups all variations).
    • If no parent exists, you’ll need to create one manually first.

Choose the variation theme

  1. Click Edit β†’ Variations.
  2. Choose the Variation Theme (e.g., Size, Color, Scent, Quantity, or SizeName-ColorName).
  3. Click Add Variations.

Enter variation details

For each variation, fill in:

  • SKU (a unique code for each variant)
  • Product ID (UPC or GTIN)
  • Price
  • Quantity
  • Condition (New)
  • Image (specific to that variation, if applicable)

Save and verify

  1. Click Save and Finish.
  2. Allow 15–30 minutes for Amazon to process and link the variations.
  3. Open the live product page and confirm every variation appears correctly in the dropdown (size, color, pack options).

Post-Execution Tasks

  • Check the Product Detail Page to confirm all variations display properly.
  • Test by selecting each variation to ensure images, price, and stock are correct.
  • Record parent and child ASINs in your Variation Tracking Sheet for reference.
  • Update your inventory and pricing tracker for each SKU.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

Variations not linking

Make sure all SKUs share the same parent ASIN and variation theme.

Wrong product shown in dropdown

Double-check the SKU and variation field mapping.

Variation theme missing

Some categories have limited themes; you may need to use a flat file upload instead.

Listing not saving

Refresh the page or switch browsers (Amazon can glitch).

Images not displaying per variation

Re-upload variation images in the correct slots.

Escalation

Contact Seller Support only if variations do not appear correctly or are not linked under one product detail page.

Message to Seller Support

Hi, I created parent/child variations for my product (ASINs: [list ASINs]) but they’re not showing together under one listing. Could you please merge or link these variations under the correct parent ASIN? The variation theme is [theme, e.g., Size or Pack Quantity]. Thank you.

Best Practices

  • Keep variation titles short and consistent (e.g., β€œExample Product – 12 oz,” β€œExample Product – 24 oz”)
  • Always use the same brand name for all variations.
  • Only group true product variations β€” not different products.
  • Upload individual images that clearly show the difference (size, color, etc.).
  • Don’t overuse variation families; unrelated products can be flagged for abuse.
